Numbered XV in the Major Arcana, The devil card follows Temperance in the series. Here we see the card of the Devil portrayed as a Satyr, a creature that is half man and half goat. He has the wings of a vampire bat, Above him is an inverted pentagram, signifying the darker side of magic and occultism. At the foot of the Devil stands a man and a woman, both naked and chained to the podium on which the Devil sits.
In a reading, it signifies that the querent is under some kind of bondage, he is voluntarily in. It shows his vices. Like in the card, the humans are free to leave as the chains are held loosely, but they don’t as their vices have held them in some kind of grip that the devil enjoys.
On one side it represents extremes of hedonism, addiction, and self-indulgence while on the other the opposite extremes of repression and abstinence. Either the seeker has voluntarily allowed himself to be enslaved to some unwanted habits or he is under the influence of a master manipulator. The power to escape lies in the hand of the querent who only need to question himself truthfully if he wants to get out of the sticky situation.
